Learn about Pipe fittings

Learn about Pipe fittings

1. Pipe fittings

In piping systems, fittings are used to change the way and devices connected to the piping. The fiitings are produced as standard as shown in Figure 1.7.

The fittings pipeline system constitutes do one of the following functions:
  • Transporting fluids: pipe
  • Changing the way flow: elbows, tee
  • Changing the the size of the pipe: reducers, Reducing tees, Reducing couplings.
  • The pipe connection: flanges, option that unions.
  • Separating the pipe: flanges, option that unions.
  • Isolate the flow: Spectacle blinds, spades and spacers
  • Connect with branches: weldolet, threadolet, sockolet
- Fittings must be produced for each and every type of connection Pipe as:
threaded, socket welded or welded . Socket Welded connection type and threaded fittings can be used for piping systems with sizes up to 4 "but usually not used for piping systems with larger sizes 2".

Welding Fittings: The fittings are made from forging materials and are produced in both the form of Welded and  seamless.

Screwed fittings: The fittings are made with sizes from 1/8 "to 4" within
Pressure range from 150, 300, 2000, 3000 and 6000 lbs. For fittings with pressure ranges of 150 and 300 lbs is made of molded materials. The other fitting is made of forgings.

- Socket Weld Fittings: This type has a hole fitting or extension to the tube
slip on, after fitting and pipe assembly in place, a weld is made to fixed
pipe and fitting location. These fittings can be made of carbon steel, stainless steel,
alloys, nickel alloys with pressure ranges 3000, 6000 and 9000lbs.

2. Fittings can be classified according to manufactured materials or by function.

- Fittings generally includes:
  • Flanges
  • Elbows (90 and 45°) and reducing elbows
  • Tees , reducing tees, and cleanouts
  • Unions
  • Laterals
  • Reducers (concentric, eccentric)
  • Caps
  • Plugs
  • Nipples, couplings, and half-couplings.
- Some less common types of fittings:
  • Swages
  • Bull plugs
  • Crosses
  • Wyes

1.2. Elbows

Elbows are often used to change the pipe. They are classified into
following three basic categories:
Classified according to radius: there are two kinds of Long Radius (LR) and Short Radius (SR). Type is commonly used by LR has 1.5 times the radius of curvature of the pipe NPS NPS ≥ ¾. Type SR radius of curvature by NPS.

Classified by shape: Reducing elbows with. This type angled elbows 900 and 1.5 times the the radius of curvature of the pipe NPS will be resized

1.2.1. Return.

Return is used to change the angle of the flow a 1800 and often
Vent used for on Tank Road. Long radius bend radius can return by 1.5 times the NPS.

1.2.2. Tee.

Tee often used to create an angle of 900 branches compared to the line
run. Tee Tee two equal the form of and Reducing Tee. Equal Tee is used when the diameter
the branch and the main pipes of the same size. Reducing Tee is used when
Branch small diameter than the diameter of the main pipeline

1.2.3. Crosses

Crosses have the same functionality as Tee, is used to create two branches 900 under the angle of the main pipeline. Crosses are also two types of straight and Reducing crosses, made with the butt weld connection type, socket weld and thread. However crosses rarely used in the oil and gas industry and chemicals. They are often used in areas with limited space requirements in the shipbuilding industry.
